Bears Are Active in Wawona Housing

At least one bear is actively seeking human food from residences in Wawona. On 4/27/2017 a bear obtained food from a garage and an outside freezer in Wawona. Bears were reported on residential porches there on 4/23/17 and 4/25/17. Every year bears roam through housing, taking advantage of human food sources found in neighborhoods. Although it is fun to get to see a bear, bears that get food rewards in residential areas can change to behaviors which will lead to serious and potentially dangerous problems for both people and bears.

Bears are out of their dens, are hungrily foraging around the park and have been seen in housing areas! After decades of hard work, 2016 marked a new record low number of human-bear incidents in Yosemite. This success will only continue if every park employee and resident works together to protect wildlife by:

- Keeping your homes (and offices) secure when nobody is home - windows and doors need to be closed and latched.

- Storing pet food, trash, recycling, and other possible attractants in a secure part of your house - never outside!  (R. Leahy)

Emergency Services Complex

Work on the inside is nearing completion with lights, fixtures, flooring, doors, and cabinets being installed. Construction of decks, painting, and roofing continues. Site work has resumed with the last couple of concrete pours being completed in the next week. There was a glitch with the IT/Telecom equipment that was planned to go into the basement, but as with other building basements for which water had not been an issue in the memorable past, water continued to come in, despite the installation of a sump pump. Therefore, the IT/Telecom equipment is being relocated to a new room carved out of the first floor. This is delaying the project somewhat until all of the details can be worked out and conduit and cables re-routed. Construction of the new Training Room, Garage Bays, and Fire Engine Bay is nearly complete, with lights, flooring, one roll-up door, and painting remaining. The Garage/Training Room building is very close to completion, however acceptance and occupancy must wait for the relocation of the IT/Telecom equipment in the main SAR/Fire Building as well so the fire alarm, heating and cooling systems, and the phones can be connected and tested. Completion is projected in late May or June.  (K. White)

Delays On El Portal Road

Culvert installation will continue through May 5th on the El Portal Road at “the Narrows” (between the intersection with the Big Oak Flat Road and Pohono Bridge) at 6am each morning.

The park is allowing the early start to reduce the number of days required to complete the work. Estimate for project completion is two - three weeks. There will be one (alternating) lane open with up to 30-minute delays.  (L. Acree)
