Spotted Owls and Fire
Yosemite wildlife biologist Stephanie Eyes and others just published their findings on the habitat use patterns of spotted owls in the burned landscape of Yosemite. Their results suggest that "sustaining forests burned in a mosaic of lower fire severities in different years interspersed with large unburned patches may help to preserve California spotted owls in Yosemite National Park." In light of this information, we appreciate all the hard work of the Yosemite prescribed fire program! (Citation: Eyes., S. A., Roberts, A. L., and M. D. Johnson. 2017. California Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis occidentalis) habitat use patterns in a burned landscape. Condor 119:375-388). (R. Mazur)

Yosemite Forum Tuesday, June 13

"Sierra Nevada drought vulnerability and tolerance: Observations from water isotopes" by Melissa Thaw, University of California, Merced

Isotopes can be used to track water through Sierra Nevada vegetation to determine their water sources and links to subsurface storage.  Vegetation responds quickly to changes in inputs, and utilizes deep storage during severe drought conditions.  While vegetation accesses new sources of water, deeply stored water is composed of snow melt with a residence time of about ten years.  Deep water storage is absent in the lower elevations, which experienced severe tree mortality.

The Forum will take place Tuesday, June 13, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the Yosemite Valley Auditorium.  For more information call Ami Knighten at 379-1301. (G. Stock)
